British border officials have dealt a significant blow to international drug crime at the port of Harwich. They discovered cocaine worth approximately eight million euros in a truck.

The stopped truck had entered the Netherlands and was carrying 28 pallets of clothing and shapewear from the well-known Kardashian brand “Skims.” However, hidden behind the seemingly legitimate shipment was a professionally concealed smuggling compartment in the paneling of the trailer doors. Inside, investigators discovered a total of 90 one-kilogram packages of cocaine. According to authorities, the street value of the illegal cargo is approximately £7.2 million, equivalent to more than €8 million. This smuggling operation is thus comparable in scale to the illegal drug market.

Verdict at the Crown Court

Jakub K., a 40-year-old truck driver from Poland, was sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison at Chelmsford Crown Court. As K. confessed during the investigation, he had received €4,500 for transporting the drugs. Authorities clarified that the actual delivery of the Skims products was entirely legal. Neither the exporter nor the importer of the goods had any connection whatsoever with the criminal activities or the drug smuggler.

The tachograph reveals the stopover

A crucial clue for investigators emerged from the analysis of the tachograph. It recorded an unannounced stop of exactly 16 minutes, which the truck driver had initially concealed during his interrogation. Detectives are now convinced that the 90 packages of cocaine were loaded into the converted truck precisely during this short period.

Concern over rising smuggling

Operations commander Paul Orchard explained regarding the incident: “Organized criminal groups use corrupt drivers to transport drugs – often hidden in perfectly legal shipments like this one.” Border police also see the raid as a significant success. For years, authorities have recorded a massive increase in cocaine imports into Europe. Orchard concluded by emphasizing the devastating consequences of the illegal trade: “These drugs destroy lives and cause immense suffering.”
