‘Clever and Original’: George R.R. Martin Laments Amazon Canceling Acclaimed Fantasy Series After One Season

Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin expresses his disappointment with the cancelation of My Lady Jane. The acclaimed author Martin’s in his personal blog, discussed the cancelation of Prime Video’s historical-fantasy series, My Lady Jane, which reimagined the story of Lady Jane Grey, the Nine Day Queen of England. “Speaking of television shows, I have always loved alternate history and Jane Grey, England’s nine-days queen, has always fascinated me,” Martin wrote. “Small wonder, then, that I really enjoyed My Lady Jane, a clever and original historical fantasy on Amazon Prime, set in an England full of witches and shapechangers, where Jane lasts more than nine days.”

Martin continued, “Meredith Glynn is one of the showrunners. I had the pleasure of working with her on one of the Game of Thrones spinoffs that HBO shelved a few years back, and knowing her talents, it did not surprise me that MY LADY JANE was so much fun. Witty and original, it reminded me a bit of The Great, a show I loved. Alas, The Great is gone, and it appears My Lady Jane is too. Amazon did not renew it for a second season. I wish them luck. Jane deserved more than nine days, or eight episodes.”

Premiering on June 27, My Lady Jane starred Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey in a fictionalized version of 16th-century England inhabited by the ruling human class known as the Verity and the shape-shifting Ethians who exist on the fringes of society. The series also starred an ensemble cast featuring Edward Bluemel as Lord Guildford Dudley, Anna Chancellor as Lady Frances Grey, Rob Brydon as Lord Dudley, Jordan Peters as King Edward VI, Dominic Cooper as Lord Seymour, Kate O’Flynn as Princess Mary, and Abbie Hern as Princess Bess. Upon its release, My Lady Jane was met with largely positive reviews from both critics and audiences, garnering a 95% “fresh” rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% audience score.

My Lady Jane Mixed Fantasy With Real-Life Inspirations

Following the release of My Lady Jane, Chancellor joined costar Brydon for an interview with CBR in which the pair discussed the delicate act of balancing the series’ real-life historical inspirations and its overtly fantastical elements. “It’s so fantastical and it’s so huge and ambitious in the world it’s creating,” Chancellor said. “I think it means from an acting point of view that you’ve got to still be very real. You have to stay grounded. You can’t go too large or too unnatural — especially the parents. We’re the older actors, and in a way, our job is to ground the show.”
