Cindy Crawford Still Swears By This ’90s-Inspired Makeup Routine

Proving that ageing has absolutely nothing to do with being any less beautiful are the women that we’ve watched grace our screens, runways and mags for the last three(ish) decades. Yep, we’re talking ’90s supermodels. Specifically Cindy Crawford. The incredible talent hasn’t always had the easiest road, with one bad haircut decision (we’ve all been there) nearly derailing her entire career — who would we have to thank for a bouncy blow dry?

Thankfully, we’ve got her iconic beauty spot and signature smokey glam look to thank for countless hours of makeup inspo. And she’s not done yet. Because in a recent get ready with me (GRWM) with Allure, the star showed us how she’s still rocking the ’90s makeup looks that made her the star she is today.

’90s Smokey Eye

Let’s be real, the major part of the ’90s glam moment was the smokey, smudgey eyes. So, it makes sense that six of the ten minutes in the video were allotted to the look. Starting with her brows, Cindy takes the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz ($41 at Adore Beauty) to fluff up and fill in her brows. Because for her, it was always about bold brows (lucky her!). Her hot tip? Bend the spoolie side of the pen so that it becomes angled, which she feels makes it easier to use.

Shadow:

Now we come to the main show: her sultry smokey eyes. Taking the Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette in ‘The Sophisticate’ ($89 at Charlotte Tilbury), she applies a neutral brown all over, which would be a great day look, but we’re going glam here. So next, she takes the darkest colour (which happens to be a cool-toned neutral) and applies it to the crease to help her eyes “look more deep set and big”. Her hot tip to nail this, especially as she ages? She’s found keeping her eyes open when applying get’s it in the right place.

Liner:

To “amp it up a little more” she goes in with a pencil liner; the Giorgio Armani Smooth Silk Eye Pencil ($55 at David Jones) to be exact. She builds up the tops of her lash line, being careful to keep it in tight to the lash line, building slowly and blending out (with the helpful blending brush on the pencil). Because she “hates” when there’s a gap between the liner and her lashes.

To take it even further, or in Cindy’s words, “one more step: drama” she goes back in with the light brown eyeshadow shade under her lower lashes to give it a little warmth. She then follows that up with a tiny step that makes all the different (even though it took her ages to realise it). We’re talking about lining your top waterline for that added definition. Heck, you can line your whole waterline if you’re after that “timeless-sexy-cool” look.

Mascara:

When choosing mascara, Cindy is big on the brush type. She’ll choose specific ones based solely off how easy the brush is to work with. Her current pick? L’Oréal Paris Volume Million Lashes Panorama Volumising Mascara ($32.99 at Adore Beauty), which she applies after wiping excess product off on a tissue to make sure no clumps crop up. Her technique is simple: “start at the root and lift”. This gives her the opened luscious lashes to finish off her smokey eyes. But fun fact, you won’t catch her coating her lower lashes because she can’t deal with cleaning any fall out.

Sculpted Blushed Cheeks

There’s some things in beauty that never change, and one of those is that “we love blush”. Yep, now, then and forever more we’ll be piling the pigmented stuff on our cheeks. Cindy takes just the outside shade of the Charlotte Tilbury Cheek To Chic Pillow Talk ($65 at Charlotte Tilbury) and applies it (while smiling) to the apples of her cheeks. Because that’s the way she learnt it and “if nothing (she) should get a smile in”. Iconic really.

And then she goes hard on the contouring bronzer, using another goodie from Charlotte Tilbury, the Filmstar Bronze and Glow ($97 at Charlotte Tilbury) duo. A little bronzing magic is exactly what she felt like she needed back in the day because of her ‘baby face’. She takes the warming shade under her cheekbones, around her jawline and across her forehead, amping up both definition and warmth.

Lined & Lacquered Lip

Okay, we might be kind of cheating here. Because M.A.C Lip Pencil in ‘Spice’ ($40 at Adore Beauty) isn’t actually the liner Cindy used in her GRWM video. But unfortunately her fave isn’t available in Australia. So, we went with her next best ’90s recommendation. And once she lines (but not overlined) her lips with the liner, making sure to fill them in so she’s not left with the ‘eaten off’ lip look, she goes in with a neutral gloss. Picking up the Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip ($40 at Sephora) she gives her lips an added moisture hit. Because while a “dry lip can look really cool” it just “doesn’t feel good” for real life.

And there you go, Cindy Crawfords ’90s-inspired glam in just 10 minutes. Don’t mind us, we’ll be flicking through old mags looking at our next inspo.
