The One Battle After Another previously won an Oscar in 2001 for Best Supporting Actor in Traffic.

Benicio del Toro won his first Academy Award 25 years ago for Steven Soderbergh’s crime drama Traffic. The Puerto Rican-born actor has been nominated two more times since then for Best Supporting Actor: in 2003 for 21 Grams, and this year for One Battle After Another. Del Toro returned to the Oscars red carpet at the Dolby Theater on Sunday in a Giorgio Armani Made to Measure black wool, one-button, peak lapel tuxedo trimmed in satin, paired with a black evening shirt and a bow tie.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s dystopian action-thriller is nominated for 13 Oscars this year, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Del Toro’s co-star, Teyana Taylor.

One Battle After Another is only second in the nominations race behind Ryan Coogler’s horror film Sinners, which made Oscars history and broke the record for most nominations of all time for any one movie.

The film follows a former revolutionary (Leonardo DiCaprio), who has spent years living quietly after the collapse of the militant group he once belonged to. When a ruthless military officer (Sean Penn) begins hunting him and his daughter (Chase Infiniti) down, he is forced back into the fight. Del Toro plays Sergio St. Carlos, his daughter’s Karate instructor and a community leader who ends up helping them.

“I have to say that both of these actors have inspired me my whole career,” Del Toro said of DiCaprio and Penn, while accepting the Best Supporting Actor award at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards in January. “But it’s kind of a little crazy for me, because I’m a fan. And so to have these two guys put in their heads that I had to play Sensei [was] pretty impressive, and they were very persistent.”
