Revived by the rise of the mobster aesthetic that has taken TikTok by storm over the past winter months, the flamboyant spirit of the ’80s is the latest source of inspiration for designers and It girls alike. After chunky jewelry and other elements of tailored clothing, now comes a much more unexpected style that is making a triumphant comeback: the balloon skirt.

Balloon skirts, bubble skirts, whatever you call them, one thing is certain: the pleated hem is the latest trend in summer clothing. From Miu Miu to Christopher Kane, this shocking comeback was first seen in the Fall/Winter 2024 collections on the catwalks in various versions of ruffled hems. And while we didn’t expect this trend to creep into commercial fashion so quickly, it girls and influencers have already jumped in on the bubble skirt comeback, making it a must-have fashion statement.

Although not the easiest trend to style without the risk of looking like you’re going to prom, balloon skirts can bring a unique character to any look. In mini, midi and maxi lengths, these pleated skirts are often paired with strapless tops, tops or oversized shirts, depending on your mood.
