Below, we break down everything you need to know about Miley Cyrus’ ninth studio album.
It will be released in 2025.
Something Beautiful will be released on May 30. The film accompanying the album will be released in June.
It’s a visual album.
“The visual component of this album drives the sound. The songs, whether they deal with destruction, heartbreak, or death, are presented in a way that’s beautiful, because even the worst moments in life have their own beauty. They’re shadow, they’re charcoal, they’re shades. You can’t have a picture without light and contrast.”
Expect a fashion extravaganza
Miley released the album cover and trailer, which showcased a veritable fashion tour with pieces from Thierry Mugler, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen and Alaïa. The cover itself features Miley wearing a crystal headpiece and a beaded and crystal bodysuit, from Mugler’s 1997 archive collection.
In terms of visuals, Miley found inspiration in everything from fashion to cinematography. Key references include Thierry Mugler’s 1995 couture show, a landmark collection that includes the famous robot costume Zendaya wore on the red carpet for Dune: Part Two .
“She wants everything to be like this specific fashion show or something,” music producer Shawn Everett tells Bazaar. “I love it when she talks like that. To me, it opens up the whole world.” Miley adds, “I can show him a picture or a dress and tell him to convey those colors or that fabric through sound.”
Another key reference? In 1982, the surrealist musical drama Pink Floyd: The Wall . Miley remembers watching the movie as a teenager with her brother and a friend, during which they hired a limo and dressed up in ’70s fur suits. “We really relaxed. And I have this heartfelt connection to it,” says Miley. “My goal is to make The Wall , but with better wardrobe, more glamor and more pop culture.”
Something Beautiful is more “experimental” than all her other albums
In Miley’s interview with Bazaar, Everett reveals, “[The album is] more experimental than anything she’s ever done, but in a pop way that I love.” Miley herself describes the upcoming album as “hypnotic and glamorous.” She continues, “It’s a concept album that’s an attempt to heal a somewhat sick culture through music.”
Her boyfriend collaborated with her on the album
Miley’s longtime boyfriend, Maxx Morando, and drummer for the rock band Lilly, apparently played a role in the creation of Something Beautiful . Miley reveals in her Bazaar interview that Morando helped produce many of the songs and even helped write the album’s title track. On how she combines work and love, she explains: “I’ve worked with my father forever. That’s how I met my ex-husband. I’ve always worked with people I love. And Maxx just inspires me so much.”
