Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s “Practical Magic 2 is set to dethrone “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” from the domestic box office’s top spot after its six-week reign. The “Practical Magic” sequel, featuring the original stars, garnered $4.7 million in Thursday previews and is projected for a $30 million opening weekend, according to Deadline. Though this is on the lower end of predictions, it’s enough to secure No. 1. “Spider-Man,” while falling from the top, is still poised to become the highest-grossing domestic film ever, reaching an estimated $935 million by Sunday, just $1.6 million short of beating “Star Wars: The Force Awakens'” record. It’s expected to surpass this milestone early next week. “The Odyssey,” “Coyote vs. Acme,” and “Runner” are anticipated to complete the weekend’s top five.
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman delivered a one-two punch to knock Spider-Man: Brand New Day off the top of the domestic box office in its opening frame after the superhero blockbuster spent six weekends at No. 1.
Bullock and Kidman are back as sister witches Sally and Gillian Owens in Practical Magic 2, reprising their roles from the original cult classic from 1998.
Practical Magic 2 got off to a solid start with its Thursday preview screenings, earning $4.7 million from 3,200 North American theaters.
Adding in those preview numbers, Deadline reported that Practical Magic will earn $30 million through Sunday from 4,146 North American theaters. The Warner Bros. release had a $75 million production budget before marketing costs, according to Variety.
The $30 million cume is at the low end of Deadline and Variety’s pre-release projections, which each pegged a $30 million to $40 million opening. Box Office Pro cast a wider net with a $40 million to $50 million pre-release projection for the Practical Magic sequel, while Box Office Theory forecast a $31 million to $43 million opening.
Even at $30 million, Practical Magic 2 made more than enough to knock Spider-Man: Brand New Day off the top of the domestic box office perch, a spot it’s held since it opened in theaters on July 31.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Likely Won’t Set The New Domestic Box Office Record Until Early Next Week
While Spider-Man: Brand New Day is dropping from the top spot at the domestic box office, the Sony Pictures Entertainment release is still poised to become the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office — just not this weekend.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, holds the current record at $936.6 million. However, Sony Pictures that Tom Holland’s fourth Spidey solo film is looking at a take of $8.4 million from 3,303 North American theaters through Sunday — which would boost the film’s stateside total to $935.1 million, $1.4 million shy of tying The Force Awakens.
As such, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will have to wait until Monday or Tuesday to finally break the Star Wars movie’s record.
Deadline projects that Universal Picture’s Christopher Nolan epic The Odyssey will finish at No. 3 this weekend with an estimated take of $7.4 million ($600.5 running cume domestic). The trade also projected that Angel Studios’ action comedy Runner — starring Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson — will open at No. 4 with a projected take of $6.6 million from 2,568 North American Theaters.
Ketchup Entertainment’s live-action and animated hybrid Coyote vs. Acme is projected by Deadline to take in $6.2 million. Should the projections hold, it will boost Coyote vs. Acme’s running cume to $47.7 million.
