I think it is important that you hear it: you have very likely been reading your horoscope the wrong way.

I am sure you have clicked on a monthly, yearly or love horoscope at least once, whether on the websites of various magazines or on social media. These texts are usually organised by zodiac sign. When it comes to astrological transits, such as Jupiter entering Leo, which we recently discussed, their potential effects are generally explained through the way a certain period may influence each sign individually. In that case, like many people, you probably skimmed the article, skipped the introduction and went straight to your own sign. But that is exactly where the most common mistake lies.

Let us say you were born under the sign of Leo. You probably read what a particular transit or period has in store for Leos. However, you should actually be paying attention to the sign that corresponds to your rising sign, or ascendant. Although modern astrology tends to focus most heavily on the Sun sign, the one most people simply refer to as their sign, astrologers assign the rising sign a special role in interpreting life circumstances, personal expression and the way someone experiences the world around them.

 What is a rising sign, and why is it so important?

To understand the significance of the rising sign, we first need to explain its role. In astrology, the rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of a person’s birth. Unlike the Sun sign, which is determined solely by the date of birth, calculating the ascendant requires an exact birth time and place. In astrological practice, interpreting a birth chart is not possible without the rising sign, because it serves as the starting point from which the entire chart is formed. The first house, ruled by the ascendant, is considered the foundation of the birth chart, and the position of all the other houses is determined from it.

A birth chart is divided into 12 houses, each symbolically representing a different area of life, from personality and relationships with others to love, career, finances and personal challenges. The signs in which these houses fall, as well as the planets that occupy them, provide additional insight into an individual’s character, tendencies and experiences. The aspects formed between planets in the birth chart are also analysed as indicators of certain life themes and events, and their significance is interpreted in relation to the rising sign.

Because the first house determines the arrangement of all the others, it also determines which area of life a particular planetary transit will affect. For this reason, when astrologers write monthly or yearly forecasts, they consider planetary influences in relation to the ascendant. One common misconception is that the rising sign only begins to make itself felt after the age of 30. Although this idea is often repeated, there is essentially no rule linking the strength of the ascendant exclusively to a particular age. Its influence is associated with the degree at which the ascendant is positioned. For example, if you have Virgo rising at an early degree, such as zero or five degrees, you may notice the traits of that sign from an early age. On the other hand, someone whose ascendant is at a late degree, such as 28 degrees, may, according to this symbolism, also display certain characteristics of the following sign, in this case Libra. If the first house also extends into the next sign, especially when the ascendant sits at the very end of a particular sign, it may be useful to read the interpretation for the following sign as well.

The rising sign in different astrological traditions

The rising sign is not only highly significant in modern astrology. It also occupies an important place in a number of other astrological systems. In Indian astrology, known as Jyotish, the ascendant is called the Lagna and is considered one of the key points in the interpretation of a birth chart. Unlike the modern Western approach to horoscopes, which in popular culture tends to rely primarily on the Sun sign, Jyotish places particular emphasis on the Lagna and the position of the Moon. According to this astrological system, the Lagna is associated with the physical body, health and an individual’s life path, which is why it is regarded as the foundation for further astrological interpretation. For this reason, many astrologers recommend paying attention not only to your rising sign, but also to the sign in which your Moon is placed when reading your horoscope.

In Hellenistic and horary astrology, which are among the oldest branches of the astrological tradition focused on interpreting events and making predictions, the ascendant also played a central role. It was regarded as a symbolic representation of the person whose birth chart was being analysed or whose question was being considered. Particular importance was also given to the planet ruling the sign of the ascendant, as it was viewed as a guide through the individual’s life path.

In modern astrology, the rising sign is often associated with the way a person expresses their personality, their behaviour, physical appearance and the impression they make on others. As the starting point of the first house in the birth chart, the ascendant is considered the foundation for interpreting every other area of life. Opposite it lies the descendant, the point marking the beginning of the seventh house, which in astrological symbolism is associated with partnerships, marriage, close relationships and the way we choose the people we allow into our lives.

When searching for personal style, interests or a deeper understanding of their own personality, astrologers often emphasise the importance of becoming familiar with the sign of the ascendant. Your rising sign can offer insight into how you present yourself to the world, how you express yourself and the first impression you make on others.

People with Virgo rising, for example, are often associated with refinement and a preference for elegance, while responsibility and an analytical nature are commonly attributed to their character. Pisces rising, on the other hand, is linked to a vivid imagination, creativity and a need for artistic expression, with softer and more fluid forms often becoming part of personal identity. Those with Leo rising are often described as highly charismatic, while Sagittarius rising is frequently associated with optimism and openness. Every sign has qualities that make it distinctive, and to understand yourself more deeply, as well as everything the universe may be trying to tell you, it is important to pay attention to your rising sign first, and then to your Sun.
