George Russell has framed his Austrian Grand Prix victory as a Mercedes reset after admitting he feels himself again following a difficult run before Spielberg.
The Briton converted pole into victory at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday, beating Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli to claim his second win of the 2026 Formula 1 season and his first since the opening round in Melbourne.
That result was already important on paper. The sharper development is what Russell said afterwards: this was not just a clean weekend, but a personal release. In his post-race media appearance, Russell said he felt himself again and praised Mercedes for helping him through low moments, according to Formula 1’s official Austrian GP interview.

Mercedes get more than a race win
For Mercedes, the timing matters. Antonelli remains a central figure in the championship picture, but Russell’s Spielberg response gives the team a second front-line threat again before the Belgian and Hungarian rounds in July.

Russell had been under pressure to turn strong qualifying speed into a complete Sunday, and Austria delivered exactly that. Leading from the front at a track where Verstappen and Ferrari both carried obvious storylines also gives Mercedes a cleaner benchmark than a chaotic recovery drive would have done.
The win will not settle the title race by itself, but Russell’s language changed the meaning of the weekend. Mercedes did not simply bank points; they got one of their leaders sounding convinced again.
