A Labour MP has launched a “summer of sex” campaign and vowed to bring sex toys into parliament. Samantha Niblett, MP for South Derbyshire, is pushing for more open lifelong sex education in the UK.
The 47-year-old has launched the “Yes Sex Please, We’re British!” campaign alongside sextech entrepreneur Cindy Gallop. It is hoping to promote more inclusive sex education in a bid to promote healthy relationships and prevent abuse and violence. It will also raise awareness on how menopause and stress can impact sexual satisfaction.
In an interview with Politics Homes, Ms Niblett revealed she first watched pornography when she was 10. However, she was left unable to talk about it due to her age.
The MP added that she recently saw content on the MakeLoveNotPorn website which was founded by Cindy Gallop. The site aims to offer an alternative to hardcore pornography.
Ms Niblett explained how the website features “real people who are having messy, funny, intimate, sensual sex together”. She added: “It’s a turn on, it helps you masturbate, helps you come.”
Ms Niblett also hopes to bring sex toys into the House of Commons to encourage open conversation. She told Politics Home that self-pleasure is “good for your health” but slammed school sex education for being “pretty medical” rather than focusing on feeling good.
She explained: “It was all focused on what you shouldn’t do, not what you should do. Pleasure certainly didn’t play a part in it. And as a girl, you’re just worried about either getting an STD or getting pregnant. I don’t remember talking about contraception much either.”
She added: “It’s funny, just because I’m doing a campaign on sex education, it’s not because I’m this massively empowered, sexually flamboyant person. I’m not. I wish I were.”
The MP also said she would “happily” have a conversation with the BBC about creating more educational adult content. As well as Cindy Gallop, she wants to involve TV presenter Davina McCall, relationship expert Paul Bruson, and sex education content creators in her campaign.
It comes after the Labour Party recently agreed to ban “barely legal” pornography depicting sexual relationships between step-relatives fdollowing pressure from MPs. Ms Niblett has also welcomed the banning of nudification apps.
