This Drink Is The Worst For The Brain: ‘It Accelerates Cognitive Decline And Promotes Alzheimer’s Disease’

A study from the University of South Florida highlights the harmful effects of certain drinks on the brain, which could accelerate cognitive decline. Taking care of your brain also involves diet. Some foods and drinks are real allies for memory and cognitive functions, others can have a harmful effect in the long term. Sugar, particularly in liquid form, is increasingly being singled out by researchers. As reported by  George V Magazine a study conducted by University of South Florida looked at the impact of certain drinks on the brain. And the results are worrying: some of them may accelerate brain aging.

A study from the University of South Florida highlights the harmful effects of certain drinks on the brain, which could accelerate cognitive decline. Taking care of your brain also involves diet, industrial fruit juices, unsuspected enemies of the brain.

To conduct the study, the researchers followed more than 4,000 adults over the age of 30, who underwent cognitive testing and brain imaging. The results showed that people who consumed certain sugary drinks daily showed early signs of cognitive decline. Among the abnormalities detected: a reduction in total brain volume, poorer episodic memory and even atrophy of the hippocampus, an area essential for memory. These markers are known to be warning signs of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

The study reveals that the drinks most associated with these harmful effects are industrial fruit juices such as orange, apple or grapefruit juice. Although they are often perceived as healthy, these juices contain a significant amount of natural sugars, often close to that of sodas. However, excessive sugar consumption disrupts cognitive processes and neuropsychological markers involved in the development of dementia. Unlike whole fruits, these drinks no longer contain the fibers that slow down the absorption of sugar, which causes blood sugar spikes that are harmful to the brain.

Limit sugar to preserve your brain

As with any diet, excess is the real problem. Experts recommend limiting fruit juice consumption to one small glass (125 ml) per day, ideally at breakfast. To avoid the harmful effects of sugar, it is best to choose a 100% pure juice, without added sugars, additives or water, or better, a homemade squeezed orange. Another alternative: favor whole fruits, which provide essential fiber and slow down the absorption of sugar. By adopting these reflexes, it is possible to enjoy the benefits of fruits without risking accelerating brain aging.
