Osaka’s outfit tied in additional accessories including Beats headphones adorned in ruffles and pearls, and tiny bows on her socks. The tennis star arrived to the court also wearing a tulle underskirt which added extra volume to the short green look.
The ‘coquette’ trend ties in sweet, romantic, and sometimes playful elements and focuses on hyper-feminine elements like lace, bows and cottagecore floral prints.
Osaka chose to wear a Brat-green and white set for her debut, but also has a matching set in black and white, seen on social media, prepared for upcoming matches at Flushing Meadows this year.
“[The color green] gives me peace and serenity,” Osaka told the New York Times, “I think colors give you power.”
Fashion designer Yoon Ahn, co-creator of the Ambush fashion label, shared on Instagram the look had taken two years to come together from the first meeting with the tennis player.
“Designing is an exercise of listening and imagining the story the athlete wants to tell,” she wrote. Yoon and Ambush have previously paired up with Nike on colourful, sportswear-inspired collections.

After her match Osaka told reporters she drew inspiration from Japan’s colourful, playful and self-expressive Harajuku style.
She shared that she did have one thing on her mind as she tackled her match against 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko, winning 6-3, 6-2.
“I do remember thinking, like, I need to win this match so I can wear my other colour,” she admitted.
The 2024 US Open marks Osaka’s return to the tournament since she gave birth to her daughter, Shai in July 2023.
To celebrate the collaboration between Yoon Ahn and Nike, the sportswear giant also released a capsule collection during Osaka’s match.
Nike Women by Yoon is devoid of the ruffles and bow which Osaka selected, but features a new take on old-school, tennis-inspired looks. The sportswear influence is also dominating fashion right now so the range will surely be a quick sellout.
