Actor Willem Dafoe does not want to convey political messages with his films. “I don’t think in categories of messages,” said the 68-year-old in an interview with the DPA and other media representatives. “Every time you publish something, it reflects your own experiences. And the way I live is my political stance, and that also applies to the films I make. So I’m not thinking about supporting a political stance.”

Dafoe stars in “Poor Things”, the new film by Giorgos Lanthimos. In the fantasy comedy, he plays a bizarre scientist who inserts a baby’s brain into a woman named Bella (Emma Stone).

As her brain matures, Bella questions all social conventions and continually irritates those around her. The film just won a Golden Globe in the Comedy/Musical category, and Stone won for Lead Actress in a Comedy.

“I’m proud to be involved in this film,” said Dafoe. “Poor Things” will make people think and he can only support that. This approach is closer to him than supporting specific political concerns. The film is about questioning things. “And that in itself is a political act.”
