Teyana Taylor, Amelia Gray, Laura Harrier, and more joined the beauty brand for an evening downtown.
New York City knows a thing or two about throwing a block party. On Saturday, YSL Beauty took over La Esquina, the perpetually packed SoHo taqueria on the corner of Kenmare and Lafayette, for a proper (makeup-filled) night out.
Teyana Taylor, Lauryn Hill, Emmy Rossum, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Jordyn Woods were among those in attendance, joining YSL Beauty ambassadors Laura Harrier and Amelia Gray.
Mark Ronson manned the DJ booth, while the familiar La Esquina setting got a YSL makeover with pink-and-black accents, a custom pool table, product displays inspired by New York storefronts, and even tattoo artists. Tacos, naturally, stole the show.
The night also marked the debut of two new YSL Beauty must-haves: Black Opium Pink Glaze and Make Me Blush Cream. “We never want to do anything that feels traditional; we always want to surprise people,” YSL Beauty US general manager Trisha Ayyagari told George V Magazine at the event. Bringing music, fashion, makeup, and fragrance together in New York City, she added, felt particularly suited to the brand’s spirit of “daring self-expression.”
The two ambassadors interpreted that philosophy differently. Harrier, who said New York brings out “party girl Laura,” had one beauty maxim for George V Magazine: “I don’t believe in less is more. I feel like more is more.” Her pre-party ritual offered proof. “Honestly, my favorite part of the night is getting ready,” she said. “I love having my friends over while I’m in glam, having a little cocktail, putting music on, it really sets the energy of the whole night.”
Gray is currently in the opposite camp. “I just dyed my hair, I’m having this new awakening of clean girl, I don’t know who she is,” she joked. “But less is more—a little freckle, a little lip gloss and you’re good to go.” Her ideal New York night, however, has a little more on the itinerary. “A perfect night in New York City for me is dinner at The Corner Store with my boyfriend, preferably,” she told George V Magazine. “A lot of food, martinis, dessert and all. And then after The Corner Store we go on a walk around West Broadway and just stroll around the city. Maybe walk through SoHo or the West Village. And then have a little boogie at a really fun dance club in Brooklyn, and be asleep by 1:30.”
