What Are Cloud Curls? Autumn’s Most Popular Hair Styling Trend

Many of the hair styling trends we’ve seen have had a polished and luxury feel to them. From bouncy blowdries to heatless curls, we’ve been trying to create volume, movement and body – while smoothing any kind of frizz into submission. Thankfully, there’s a new hair styling trend set to take over this autumn and it requires a lot less maintenance. Introducing: cloud curls. Cloud curls are about making the most of your hair’s natural texture – or cleverly crafting it if your hair needs a little nudge in the right direction.

“Cloud curls basically refer to natural-looking, airy and textured waves or curls with a halo of intentional fluff that brings a youthful, ethereal and carefree energy,” says hairstylist and trend expert Tom Smith, who coined the term. Perfect for those who want to retain a sense of summer’s laidback vibe as we transition into the cooler months, it’s a style that’s all about looking undone, carefree and casual.

“For those with naturally curly or wavy hair, work with your natural texture,” Smith suggests. “Or create a similar style by braiding your hair after rough drying just before it has completely dried or cooled. Leave it to set and then gently loosen with your fingers.” The key here is to allow your hair to maintain a sense of freedom and movement, steering away from anything too structured or defined.

But even if your hair is naturally straight, there’s still a way in which you can embrace the trend. Smith recommends using a small curling iron on small sections, alternating the direction of each curl to mimic the soft, undone wave pattern. “Finish with a styling powder or texturizing spray and shake your hair upside down for that airy, fluffy finish,” he advises. The goal is to achieve a naturally tousled look that still feels intentional and put together.
