“Our humanitarian flights will bring food, medicines and basic necessities”

That is why we must engage. Our humanitarian flights will bring food, medicine and essential goods,” von der Leyen announced on X.

“The transition must protect all minorities. And I agree with those who have called for creating the conditions for a safe and dignified return of refugees,” the President of the European Commission later wrote on X, after the call with the G7 members today. “Over thirteen years, we have mobilised €33,3 billion through conferences to support Syrians outside but also inside Syria. The conference mechanism could be used in the future to mobilise resources for reconstruction,” von der Leyen highlighted.

More than one million people have been newly displaced in Syria after the offensive by groups that led to the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said, specifying that most of them are women and children. “As of today, December 12, 1,1 million people have been displaced in the country since the escalation of hostilities began on November 27. The majority are women and children,” reads a statement, reported by international media.
