Long relegated to medicine cabinets, petroleum jelly continues to be passed down through generations without losing its usefulness. This jelly, derived from petroleum refining, is completely purified and free of perfume or preservatives, and remains one of the most versatile everyday products. Used in both dermatology and cosmetics, it is appealing due to its simplicity, low cost, and excellent skin tolerance, even for infants and the elderly.

Vaseline primarily acts as a protective barrier. Contrary to some misconceptions, it doesn’t directly moisturize the skin since it contains no water. Its main role is to prevent the evaporation of the moisture naturally present in the epidermis. As a result, it helps protect chapped lips, damaged hands, cracked heels, and areas irritated by cold and friction. Its lubricating effect also explains its popularity among athletes, who use it to prevent chafing between the thighs, under the arms, or on the feet.

Between medical uses, beauty and everyday tips

In medicine, petroleum jelly remains widely used to promote the healing of minor superficial wounds, protect certain minor burns, and soothe irritations associated with eczema. It also serves as a carrier for some dermatological treatments to minimize irritation caused by medications applied to the skin. In cosmetics, it can be used as a lip balm, gentle makeup remover, eyebrow enhancer, or to prolong the life of perfume. Some people also use it to add shine to hair or to protect the skin during hair coloring.

However, this product is not without its precautions. Its highly occlusive nature can promote breakouts on oily or acne-prone skin, which is why specialists advise against applying it to the entire face. Vaseline should also not be used on an open or infected wound. Its use as a personal lubricant is also discouraged: incompatible with latex condoms, it can increase the risk of infection and is difficult to remove. Pharmacists recommend using only white petroleum jelly, either pharmaceutical or pharmaceutical grade, guaranteed free of additives and irritants.
