How is such a move supposed to work and which metropolises were designed as planned cities?
Why does Jakarta have to move?
- Indonesia wants to move its capital Jakarta : from the island of Java, where 56 percent of the Indonesian population lives, to the island of Borneo, 2,000 kilometers away – with less than seven percent of all Indonesians.
- However, the entire metropolis is not to be relocated; the focus is initially on the entire government apparatus .
- Jakarta, with its ten million inhabitants, suffers from poor urban planning , which is visible, among other things, in massive traffic jams.
- There are also numerous environmental problems : some city districts are already several meters below sea level and floods occur regularly. The north of Jakarta sinks by around 25 centimeters every year.
- In the new capital Nusantara, a completely new infrastructure is to be built with around 28 billion euros, which could then be used by millions of residents.
- Environmental activists warn that space for the new metropolis on Borneo will be gained by clearing virgin forest – which will destroy the habitat of numerous endangered animal species.
This is how moving from Jakarta works
???? Construction work on the island of Borneo is scheduled to begin in autumn 2022 , initially focusing on the infrastructure .
???? The first parts of the government are expected to work from Nusantara in 2024 , which would probably affect several thousand people. The move of political leadership is expected to be completed in 2034 .
???? The new capital should be ready by 2045 – on an area of 256,000 hectares . For comparison: Saarland covers an area of 257,000 hectares.
