Report: Syrians Who Served In The Army Are Deprived Of Swedish Citizenship

In the last five years, nearly 700 Syrian citizens have been denied Swedish citizenship because of serving in that country’s army. People who belong to an organization that has committed crimes against humanity must wait 25 years to receive Swedish citizenship.

Critics argue that service in the Syrian army is compulsory, and the decision to deny citizenship would therefore affect anyone who has served in the army.

Mats Rosenqvist, director at the Swedish Migration Agency, says that these cases are assessed on a case-by-case basis and that many Syrians have received Swedish citizenship despite serving in the military.
