“We are facing a threat of something like a division of spheres of influence between these three powers and a decline in Europe’s importance in this whole agreement,” said former Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz on TVP Info’s “Question of the Day.” In an interview with Dorota Wysocka-Schnepf, he pointed to the threats posed by a possible agreement between the United States, Russia, and China on Ukraine.
The former Polish foreign minister responded to Donald Trump’s statements regarding the war in Ukraine. He believes the American president is trying to persuade Kyiv to make concessions to Russia.
– Of course, President Donald Trump wants to force Ukraine to make concessions, which is obviously unacceptable for President Zelensky in this situation – assessed Czaputowicz.
“There is no place for Europe in this triumvirate”
Dorota Wysocka-Schnepf asked the guest whether the planned talks between Trump, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping could be compared to a new Yalta.
Czaputowicz dismissed this comparison as journalistic, though he noted certain similarities. He emphasized that the American president could not decide on his own to cede part of Ukraine’s territory to Russia. In his opinion, Ukrainian consent, supported by European countries, would be necessary.
However, the former minister drew attention to the absence of Europe at the three-power talks table.
– And this is perhaps the most important point that should worry us, that there is no place for Europe in this triumvirate – he said.
He pointed out that a potential agreement could weaken the position of European countries. At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine’s future is not certain and still depends on the situation on the front.
What would an agreement between the great powers mean for Poland?
Czaputowicz presented two possible scenarios. In the first, Russia achieves its goals in Ukraine, which, according to him, significantly worsens Poland’s security situation. The former minister predicts that in such a scenario, the United States and some European countries could gradually return to economic cooperation with Moscow.
The second scenario assumes maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty and greater European participation in peace talks. According to Czaputowicz, an independent Ukraine would then constitute an additional factor strengthening Poland’s security.
In this context, the former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the importance of the permanent presence of American troops in Poland, including the concept of the base known as “Fort Trump”.
“ I think the United States will want to be rooted here ,” he said.
Czaputowicz emphasized that final decisions regarding the American military presence have not yet been made. In his opinion, maintaining strong ties with the United States is particularly important in the event of a possible agreement between Washington and Moscow.
