Plus, Tacos Por Vida heads east, a collab doughnut at Holey Grail, and more
“While we cannot comment on the names or employment records of our crew members, we can share that a couple of our most iconic former carhops were rehired for a shift at our Duarte, California Drive-In yesterday,” a representative from Sonic told Eater. “We cannot confirm any names, but we can confirm fun was had by both crew members and guests.” Richie confirmed the filming at Sonic on August 7 with an Instagram post of her in the hot dog costume; the caption reads, “When you think of weiners, think of me.” The shift at Sonic is a callback to the third episode of the first season of The Simple Life titled “Sonic Burger Shenanigans.” In that episode, Hilton and Richie are hired to work at Sonic for a day but things quickly go awry as they adapt to the fast-food worker role.
The Simple Life premiered in 2003 and ran until 2007. Each episode would follow Hilton and Richie as they left their usual lives behind and took on jobs like dairy farming and working at a gas station. Hilton announced that The Simple Life would be returning for a reunion episode via Instagram on July 17, 2024. The duo teased the revival in May with coordinated Instagram posts. A premiere date hasn’t been announced yet, but in the meantime, it seems like Hilton and Richie will continue filming and sliving.
Tacos Por Vida heads east
Roy Choi’s Tacos Por Vida has ended its run on the Westside and set up shop in Eagle Rock as of July 30. Choi hasn’t set a permanent schedule for the new spot yet, but posts updates from the Kogi BBQ X account regularly. Taco Por Vida’s new spot on York puts the stand just steps away from where longstanding favorites Leo’s Tacos and Angel’s Tijuana Tacos set up to serve taco-hungry Los Angeles diners.
A collab doughnut from David Kuo and Holey Grail Donuts
David Kuo of Little Fatty has collaborated with Holey Grail Donuts on a new taro doughnut with a roasted banana coconut glaze, topped with caramelized sesame seeds, peanut clusters, and an ube drizzle. The doughnut will be available from August 15 to September 25, and 20 percent of the proceeds will be donated to No Us Without You LA, a charity that helps families facing food insecurity in Los Angeles.
A sushi restaurant flip-flop
Yasu Beverly Hills has temporarily closed for relocation and has flipped into Rockpool in the meantime. The casual sushi restaurant serves locally caught fish as part of an omakase or a la carte menu.
A new yakitori restaurant is opening in Culver City
What Now LA reports that Gokigen Tori, a yakitori restaurant, is opening in Culver City soon. The menu is set to feature skewers that include Japanese chicken wings, shishito peppers, and bacon-wrapped mochi. Gokigen Tori has been sharing progress on its buildout via its Instagram but has not announced an opening date yet.
