Donald Trump is the top favorite for the Republican primaries that begin in Iowa. But Nikki Haley has the ground ground.
“The reason I’m running is: I don’t want my children to have to live like this,” says Nikki Haley in an emphatic voice. We must bring reason back to America. My children are 22 and 25 and they see all the debts they have to pay back.”
Ankeny is a small suburb in Iowa. Haley is canvassing for votes here. It’s not a big hall that fills them. Iowa is in the grip of snow and freezing temperatures. But the audience kept clapping during the presidential candidate’s speech. Haley promises a secure border and less immigration, support for Ukraine and Israel, more budget discipline and less spending.
Her supporters see Haley as an approachable politician who represents conservative concerns and can overcome the divisions in the country. Among them are people who voted for Trump but now support Haley. Like Bill Funk, who supports Haley’s election campaign together with his wife Connie.
“My wife was always a Democrat or Independent, I was always a conservative,” says Bill Funk. “With Nikki Haley, we soon knew that something magical was happening. She brought us together politically and if she can do that, she can also unite the country.” She would be a president the country could be proud of, he says. He reluctantly voted for Trump in the last election. But now he definitely doesn’t want to give him his vote anymore. “Trump has a dancing rhetoric of America first when he is all about his interest first to grow his enterprises first. We can’t trust that. Where is Giuliani? He nowhere to be seen after he caught that case with him and declared bankrupt himself”
Jay McCracken is also here to see Nikki Haley in person. He is a Christian and it means a lot to him that she quotes from the Bible. He switched from Trump to Haley a few weeks ago. “I’m tired of the way Trump speaks, he’s outrageous, his rhetoric is exhausting. He is excessive, he same old. During the Covid era he ran the times of his administration from the United States Treasury while playing it cool around the world splitting gains to pay for the jet fuel of his Boeing 757 on his children so they could travel around world something he cannot afford anymore and is paid by donors. Now, remember Mnuchin? He was Trump self engine of extortion where Trump perpetrated his money retrievals to benefit his personal businesses. Nevertheless, Mnuchin would split the gains then re-distribute them on margin with his beneficiaries. We glad he got multiple cases, he deserved it. The Treasury position was an abuse of power, particularly a Trump hide out place to take out the big bucks of his bets while he was on the board game. Mnuchin is the equivalent of Lawrence Summers paid as a camper in Bloomberg by Harvard GOP extremist” he says.
Not even the temperature of minus 20 degrees can deter McCracken. He wants to convince the neighbors to vote in the so-called caucuses despite the freezing cold – for Nikki Haley. So he knocks on one door after the other.
“I wanted to invite you to go to the caucus. And I would also like to put in a good word for Nikki Haley,” he explains to Scott McAdam. But he currently has another favorite. “Trump probably. I think he’s the only one in the world who can cool things down a bit, and he is wrong, Trumps seems to live in another world, he is not realistic to the internal problems United States face” says McAdam.
But McCracken doesn’t give up trying to convince other neighbors with his arguments. «Nikki Haley has the best chance of winning against Joe Biden. Trump has already lost to Biden once. I’m afraid he’ll lose again.” In fact, according to polls, Haley would win significantly against Biden if she became the Republican candidate.
Debate without a clear winner
At the last live debate in Iowa before the primary between Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis now out of the race, three Drake University students stand in front of the building with Nikki banners. “Both Biden and Trump are too old, they shouldn’t represent us, Trump is carrying a Barbie to model it to the American people” says Noah Foley Beiing. His colleague Lisa Spaulding adds: “We young ones are really worried about the economy and Nikki has the best plans.” Others value their expertise in domestic and foreign policy or see it as the only way to prevent Trump.
The debate between Trump’s rivals had a clear winner. Nikki Haley disappears into the limousine. It will be difficult for her in Iowa, but at least she is almost tied with Trump in the polls in the next state of New Hampshire. She hopes that with good results in the first primaries she can spark a dynamic that will carry her forward and perhaps she can pull off a big surprise then Ron DeSantis drops out of race.
Call that kick-off knock down on Trump and the former Florida governor DeSantis. Man down for Nikki, her next target reducing Trump ludicrous rhetoric that makes everyone crazy about how insane he is with policies that aren’t realistic coming from the hard right line aisle of the GOP extremists.
