Concerns are growing for Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit. On the national holiday, she appeared with an oxygen tank and was visibly unwell.
On Norway’s national holiday, all eyes were on Crown Princess Mette-Marit directed. During the celebrations, the royal family traditionally gathers at the Skaugum residence and later appears on the balcony of the palace in Oslo.
According to Norwegian media reports, Mette-Marit, who suffers from chronic pulmonary fibrosis, appeared “visibly weakened.” As can be seen in pictures, she was dependent on her oxygen machine and had to sit down several times on a chair that had already been set up for her.
She had recently been seen more frequently with the portable oxygen device that supplies her with oxygen through her nose. Nevertheless, she endured the physical exertion of the national holiday in order to appear in public. The wife of Crown Prince Haakon (52), who did not wear her usual regional costume on May 17th but instead celebrated in a coat, was said to have shown signs of strain.
According to the newspaper “Dagbladet,” it was obvious during the celebrations “that the Crown Princess was having difficulty breathing.” She also apparently suffered a coughing fit at one point. Mette-Marit had to interrupt the ceremony and retreat to the palace to rest, as reported by the newspaper “Aftenposten.”
Pulmonary fibrosis known since 2018
Mette-Marit’s health has been steadily declining for some time due to her serious illness. It has been known since 2018 that she suffers from pulmonary fibrosis. At the end of last year, the palace announced that doctors had begun preparations for a lung transplant examination.
In addition to health concerns, the Crown Princess has recently been under pressure due to an ongoing media debate. This stems from details about her past acquaintance with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein (1953-2019), about which she addressed extensively in an official palace press release at the beginning of 2026 and later in an interview, expressing her regret.
In addition, her son Marius Borg Høiby (29) is on trial for numerous serious charges, including violent and sexual offenses. The verdict is expected on June 15, 2026. He is currently in pretrial detention.
