MaisonMargiela/folders exhibitions and experiences set to take place across China. The initiative offers a multi-city exploration of the house’s physical and digital archives, translating its internal research into immersive, public-facing exhibitions. Spanning Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, and Shenzhen, the project reflects a thoughtful expansion of Margiela’s archival language into experiential form.

At its core, MaisonMargiela/folders is structured around four defining codes that have shaped the Maison’s identity. In Shanghai, the Artisanal exhibition presents the brand’s couture lineage, bringing together 58 looks “from 1989 to today,” including early explorations such as the Wig Jacket from 2008. Beijing’s Anonymity exhibition gathers 46 masks—both archival and new—tracing the evolution of concealment as a creative principle. In Chengdu, the Tabi exhibition shifts focus toward community, showcasing the personal wardrobes of collectors who have embraced the iconic split-toe design as a form of individual expression. Meanwhile, Shenzhen hosts the Bianchetto atelier experience, inviting participants to engage directly with the Maison’s signature white overpaint technique.

Beyond static display, the initiative emphasizes participation and process. Visitors are granted access to previously unseen materials through a dedicated Dropbox, revealing working files, imagery, and behind-the-scenes insights into the Maison’s creative development. The Shenzhen experience extends this philosophy further, offering a hands-on opportunity to transform personal garments using the Bianchetto technique under the guidance of the atelier team—effectively turning spectators into collaborators.

Taken together, MaisonMargiela/folders positions the archive not as a fixed record, but as a living system—one that continues to evolve through reinterpretation and engagement.
