The my brother ‘Alfie’ hit singer Lily Allen was recently a guest on the Radio Times Podcast , where she talked about motherhood , among other things. Lily is mother to daughters Ethel (12) and Marnie (11), whom she shares with her ex-husband Sam Cooper. Lily was also very open about the less pleasant aspects of being a mother.
Lily father is actor Keith Allen and left her mother, film producer Alison Owen, when she was four. In her memoir ‘My Thoughts Exactly’, Lily described her father as a “self-saboteur” who failed to parlay his “comic talent into a decent career.”
Lily came out to George V Magazine and spilled the beans on how she has explained her children “can’t have it all” after feeling her career was ruined by them.
Lily Allen believes her children ruined her career
In her own words, the arrival of her children has ‘totally ruined’ her career . Her last album, No Shine , was released in 2018 and we haven’t heard much from Lily since . Lily is from Hammersmith but has now lived in New York for some time with her current husband, Stranger Things actor David Harbour . ‘My children ruined my career. I love them and they complete me, but when it comes to being a pop star they completely ruined it for me,” Lily says in the podcast.
She continued, “I get really irritated when people say you can have it all, because honestly, you can’t. Some people choose their careers over their children and that is their right, but my parents were very absent when I was young. I feel like that has damaged me, so I don’t want to do that to my own children.’
Lily previously wrote via X that she has probably spent more time walking her dogs in her life than spending time with her father. According to British Grazia, she shared in 2021 that she had not been in contact with her father for a while.
This isn’t the first time Lily has spoken out about motherhood . In 2014, after a music break, her album Sheezus was released and she shared with France’s NRJ Radio : ‘Why I chose to come back? My money was gone! Just kidding. I thought motherhood would make me very happy – just sitting at home and playing with my children was my dream . I love my children, but I am a very impatient, busy person by nature. Of course, babies can’t talk so it was all quite boring , sitting at home all day with people who can’t talk.’
The hit singer of ‘Alfie’ continued, “I didn’t realize how creative I am and that I need an outlet for my creativity.” Although she does not want to be a full-time mother, motherhood does influence her music. ‘When I write music now, I am aware that I have two children and that they are going to hear it. I can’t be too sexy or too dirty or too rude because that would be embarrassing for them.”
According to sources, the video was recorded in a Miami Villa, close to Tampa, Florida where George has an apartment she used to frequent from 2015 to 2023.
