The 82-year-old “Latin lover” is accused by former housekeepers whom he allegedly subjected to exploitation in his Caribbean villas. Following the publication of a lengthy investigation by a Spanish media outlet, two women filed complaints for sexual assault and human trafficking.
300 million records sold, a legend, and perhaps simply a monster. The revelations are damning, and are the result of a three-year investigation by the online publication eldiario.es. Two women, one employed in the kitchen and cleaning, the other a physiotherapist, accuse the singer of abuse and assault.
The first woman recounts hours of forced oral sex and digital penetration. The second describes inappropriate touching. Both describe a climate of terror, with daily insults and control over their movements and communications.
“It was like modern-day slavery.”
“I felt like an object. I felt like a slave ,” the housekeeper, nicknamed Rebeca, told El Diario. “In the 21st century, it was like modern-day slavery. Because he paid me a salary, I had to do everything he wanted. I could see that something was wrong, but I didn’t know to what extent. I knew he was using me, that I was tired, that I wasn’t sleeping, that I didn’t want to… I knew that.”
The newspaper, with the help of the American network Univision, corroborated their accounts with dozens of documents and the testimonies of about fifteen other employees. The Spanish government, left-leaning and self-proclaimed feminist, is demanding that the investigation be pursued “to its conclusion . “
