This time, cyber fraud is targeting Polish companies and state-owned companies, with criminals impersonating politicians, using popular instant messaging services to extort data or money.

In an official statement, the government’s plenipotentiary for cybersecurity, Krzysztof Gawkowski, informs that the fraudsters’ modus operandi begins with creating fake accounts on instant messengers, using photos and personal data taken from the official profiles of people holding managerial positions in the government administration.

Cybercriminals then contact managers of companies and state-owned enterprises in an attempt to obtain confidential information, infect devices with malware, or extort funds.

The government commissioner urges caution when receiving unexpected messages with links, whether via text message, email, or instant messaging apps like WhatsApp or Signal. If you have any doubts about the authenticity of a message, he recommends contacting the relevant office directly.

The announcement also emphasizes the importance of regular training for management staff on the threats associated with instant messaging. Such training is being conducted by the Ministry of Digital Affairs in cooperation with NASK-PIB as part of the SecureV project.

Gawkowski reminds that official communication with representatives of the government administration takes place only through the channels indicated on the websites of central offices in the gov.pl domain, in the “Contact” tab and in the Public Information Bulletin.

Tools such as the mSzyfr messenger and the SKR-Z classified communications system, which remain under full state control, were also mentioned.

The rise in cyberattacks and institutional impersonations is driving users to increasingly embrace solutions that enhance digital and physical security. Smartphones with advanced data protection play a key role here, such as the iPhone 17 256GB, or the Samsung Galaxy S25, as do home monitoring systems, such as SETTI+ cameras, which allow for real-time monitoring of the environment. In practice, the right hardware becomes the first line of defense against increasingly sophisticated fraud attempts.
