Stephen King’s celebrated novel is returning as an eight-episode TV series on Prime Video. From the cast to the updated plot for the social media era, here’s everything we know. Mike Flanagan returns to Stephen King‘s universe with a new interpretation of one of the writer’s most famous works.

This fall, Prime Video will release an eight-episode series based on Carrie , a new take on the 1974 novel that adapts it for the social media age and expands on the story from previous film adaptations.

Here’s everything we know so far.

What is Carrie about ?

As in Stephen King’s original novel, the protagonist is Carrie White , a shy teenager who discovers she possesses telekinetic powers after being the victim of constant bullying.

The Prime Video version brings the story to the present day. According to the official synopsis, Carrie (Summer H. Howell) has spent her entire life isolated at home with her overprotective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan) . After her father’s sudden death, she is forced to attend public school for the first time, where she finds herself dealing with a viral case of bullying , the challenges of adolescence in the age of social media, and the emergence of mysterious powers she struggles to understand.

Mike Flanagan, showrunner of the series, explained that he didn’t want to simply rehash previous adaptations, but to start directly from King’s novel.

“The only way to approach this project was to build something new using elements of Carrie. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have made sense to retrace a path that had already been traveled so brilliantly,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

How will it be different from previous adaptations?

Flanagan called the series an expansion of the original story , rather than a scene-by-scene adaptation.

One of the main changes is the contemporary setting, which allows us to tell how bullying has changed in the age of the Internet and social networks .

“The themes that Steve was talking about half a century ago—kindness versus cruelty, empathy, bullying and violence in schools—are even more relevant today than he ever imagined, precisely because of our relationship with technology,” Flanagan told Entertainment Weekly .

Will there be the famous prom scene?

Yes, but not as the public remembers it.

Flanagan confirmed that the series will include some of the novel’s most iconic moments, including the infamous prom. However, the lead-up to that night and the events that unfold there will be profoundly different.

“We’ll get there in a completely different way, and what happens during the ball will be completely different, too. For those who love adapting existing works, it’s a truly irresistible opportunity,” he explained.

The cast of Carrie

Canadian actress Summer H. Howell will play Carrie White. According to Flanagan, over a thousand actresses auditioned before she was cast in the role.

The cast also includes:

  • Summer H. Howell : Carrie White
  • Samantha Sloyan : Margaret White
  • Siena Agudong : Sue Snell
  • Alison Thornton : Chris Hargensen
  • Joel Oulette : Tommy Ross
  • Josie Tota : Tina
  • Arthur Conti : Billy
  • Thalia Dudek : Emaline
  • Amber Midthunder : Miss Desjardin
  • Matthew Lillard : Principal Grayle

When is Carrie coming out on Prime Video?

Prime Video has confirmed that the series will debut in fall 2026, but the official release date has not yet been announced. We’ll have to wait for future updates to find out the exact premiere date.
