According to the Ukrainian military intelligence service HUR, North Korean soldiers opened fire on Russian soldiers in the Kursk region due to a misunderstanding. “When sending North Korean troops to the battlefield, the language barrier remains a problematic obstacle to command and coordination. Due to this problem, North Korean soldiers opened fire on the vehicles of the so-called Akhmat battalion,” said a HUR message on Telegram. Five soldiers from Chechnya are said to have been killed every week days.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Russian military is now deploying North Koreans in its own border region of Kursk in larger numbers. “The losses in this category are also already considerable,” Zelensky said in the evening video message. He did not give any figures. Zelensky accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of deliberately expanding the war against Ukraine and ignoring calls from China and Brazil to do everything possible to de-escalate the situation.
The first reports of North Korean soldiers being sent to Russia appeared in October. At the beginning of November, Ukraine first reported that these soldiers had been involved in fighting. According to Zelensky, the North Koreans are now largely integrated into Russian units and could soon appear on other fronts.
The Ukrainian head of state also announced that he would be committed to Syria. It is important for his country that stability returns there as quickly as possible so that the world can then focus on establishing peace in Ukraine. Zelensky also offered Syria grain deliveries as part of the “Grain from Ukraine” program.
The now overthrown, long-time ruler of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, was considered a protégé of Kremlin chief Putin, who has now also offered him asylum in Russia. The future of the Russian military bases in Syria is still unclear.
