HBO confirmed that their wish will finally come true
n the wake of increasingly popular remakes and continuations of cult series, as well as the interest of a new generation of viewers in “Girls” , HBO has officially approved the filming of new episodes. The four main actresses, along with Andrew Rannells, return in the limited sequel series.
This news was long overdue. Back in 2025, Dunham stated that she does not rule out the possibility of the return of the “Girls” series, if a good enough story appears.
“If we had something really specific to say, at a point in their lives where it would make sense to meet them again — for example, when millennials become mothers, enter menopause, or go into nursing homes — I would always want to work with those people again,” she said in an interview with Variety at the time .
Following the news announcement, Amy Gravitt, executive vice president and director of HBO and HBO Max comedy programming, said:
“We’re thrilled that Lena will be turning her sights from the turmoil of her twenties to a big life milestone — entering her forties. To say that the world has changed since we last saw Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa and Elijah would be a huge understatement. Still, we know that fans, both old and new, will be happy to see how much the characters have matured, but also relieved to know that they’re still the same Girls we’ve known for a long time.”
Who is returning to the cast?
According to HBO’s official announcement, in the new episodes we will again see:
- Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath
- Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels
- Jemima Kirke as Jess Johansson
- Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro
- Andrew Rannells as Elijah Krantz
It is not yet known whether Adam Driver will return to the role of Adam Sackler, nor Christopher Abbott to the role of Charlie Dattolo. It is also unknown if Alex Karpovsky, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jake Lacy, who also starred in the original series, will appear.
What did the actors and the author say about the comeback?
In a press release announcing the new episodes, Lena Dunham revealed that she had been waiting for the right moment to return to these characters for a long time.
“We’ve always said that we would only return to Girls if we had a specific story that we really wanted to tell. I missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t imagine how they would fit in today.
And then, around the time of my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me while I was in the shower. And as you may remember, once these five start talking, it’s pretty hard to get them to stop…
It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life, but this time with experience, a different perspective, and a new level of appreciation and understanding.
I love these girls (and one guy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us again and again why we do this — for the joy of togetherness … and the opportunity to wear yellow fishnets again.”
What will the new episodes be about?
Details of the plot have not yet been released. However, in an interview with Variety in 2025 , Lena Dunham shared her thoughts on where the characters might be today.
According to her idea, Shoshanna married the mayor of New York, then divorced him, and now runs a company that produces sports and casual clothing according to the principles of sustainability and zero waste.
Marnie, as Dunham imagines, is on her third marriage. She still sings, but, in the author’s opinion, she would benefit from attending meetings of a group for the treatment of addiction to sex and love relationships.
Jessa is an opponent of vaccination and lives on a boat in Croatia. Adam has become a cult stage actor and probably lives in Berlin, while Ray still sits on the city council and runs his cafe – and seems to be doing better than everyone else.
Elijah is the fourth lead star of a sitcom, making a pretty good living but still looking for love in the wrong places.
When it comes to Hannah Horvath, Dunham envisions her teaching at Bard College and enjoying raising her son. He probably has a girlfriend who, as the author vividly described, is a cook. At the same time, Hannah is less burdened by the desire for fame.
“I think that’s how her life would have turned out in the end,” Dunham concluded.
The original series “Girls” aired from 2012 to 2017 and followed four young women in New York as they try to find their place in the world, build relationships and deal with the challenges of their twenties.
When are the new episodes coming?
The exact date of the premiere has not been announced yet. HBO, however, confirmed that production should begin in 2027 , exactly ten years after the end of the sixth and final season.
The sequel will have a total of five episodes, meaning audiences will get a limited series that will show how Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna and Elijah have changed over the years — and how they’re coping with their new life circumstances today.
