The Best Street Style From Copenhagen Fashion Week

I would have said there was only one city where a guest might arrive at a fashion show wearing a hairy swimming cap, a pinafore, Bermuda shorts and strappy sandals. But the truth is: every fashion week is now beginning to resemble Copenhagen, where it seems everyone is trying to out-peacock one another for the attention of photographers, in outfits that wouldn’t have looked out of place.

That’s no bad thing. It’s sort of interesting to see attendees throw down the gauntlet when it comes to things like harmony, proportion and good taste – a Slazenger tracksuit skirt suit layered beneath a ruched bra top, with a multi-compartment Jacquemus belt bag slung over the hips, for example – but it does leave me wondering whether these outfits constitute style, or something else: a kind of fashion-week fancy dress. And whether that even matters. Copenhagen’s reputation has, after all, been built in large part through the popularity of its street-style images – even if we already know street style is an unreliable metric for what is and isn’t fashionable. Photographers are incentivised to seek out the loudest, most double-tap-worthy dressers; most people are not bedazzling their baby bumps or gluing petals to their faces before breakfast. Fun if they were, of course, but they aren’t.

Perhaps that’s what the images in the gallery below demonstrate: that getting dressed should be fun. If I were spending a week in Copenhagen, drinking French 75s at Nimb, grabbing coffee at Torvehallerne, grazing on fresh seafood at Fiskebar and swimming at La Banchina, I might well wear a raffia pillbox sprouting turquoise feathers out of sheer happiness, too.
