It was the last role actor Eric Dane played before his death in February.

One season per year – that’s the usual pattern for TV series. Fans of “Euphoria” have had to be much more patient. Four years have passed since the second season. Now the wait is over: On April 13th, the third season of the multi-award-winning drama series, which centers on drug-addicted high school student Rue, played by Zendaya, premieres on HBO Max and Sky. A new episode will be released every week.

“Euphoria”: A first look at season 3

What the trailer reveals

The finale of the last season left many questions unanswered. Most importantly: Will Rue manage to stay away from drugs? A first trailer offers a glimpse of the new episodes, which take place several years after the events of the last episode. The idea that Rue lives drug-free would be unrealistic – and this is confirmed. We see her swallowing pills of drugs to smuggle them across the border and later being interrogated by the police.

Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Nate (Jacob Elordi) are still together and about to get married. They don’t seem entirely happy before the happiest day of their lives – and somehow Nate’s vengeful ex, Maddy (Alexa Perez), seems to be involved. Jules (Hunter Schafer) is now working as an escort and runs into Nate’s father, Cal (Eric Dane), again. In short: things are going to get exciting and highly dramatic.

Disappointed premiere audience

After the first critics were given a sneak peek at the premiere, they seem to be in agreement: they describe the first episode of the highly anticipated third season as “dull” and a “disaster.” The plot feels somewhat disoriented, and the series’ original identity has been lost due to the time jump, they say. The BBC, for example, writes: “The show has lost its contemporary edge.” The fact that the new episodes have a bit of a Western feel is disconcerting many viewers. Perhaps the following episodes can still turn things around.
