In a Netflix documentary, Kylie Minogue looks back on her career, relationships, and her battle with cancer what hardly anyone suspected: her illness returned.
When people think of Kylie Minogue, most immediately picture the iconic white outfit she wore in the music video for “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” 25 years after its release, it remains not only her biggest
hit but also one of the best pop songs of all time, cementing her status as the disco icon she is still considered today.
From star to superstar
How difficult her journey was, how hard she had to work to be taken seriously as an artist, is recounted by Kylie in a new Netflix documentary titled “Kylie,” in which she looks back on her life in three episodes and speaks very openly about successes, obstacles, and setbacks. She recalls her transformation from Australian soap star to international pop star, from sweet girl to cult figure.

When it all began and she landed her first worldwide hit with “I Should Be So Lucky” in 1987, she was already a star in her homeland and one half of Australia’s favorite TV couple: her teenage romance with actor and singer Jason Donovan (57) became a favorite topic of the press. But that couldn’t last forever and ended shortly after Kylie met rock star and INXS frontman Michael Hutchence. He invited them both to one of his concerts. But he was only interested in getting to know Kylie, Jason admits in an interview.
Great love
When Minogue fell in love with Hutchence, she was very young and deeply impressed by his self-confidence. He rubbed off on her, and she began to break free from the image of the wholesome pop singer. She became sexier, less conformist, and freer. Michael Hutchence changed Kylie in the two years they were together. “He was my first in so many ways. And one of those firsts was heartbreak.”

“I was devastated,” she confesses, revealing how deeply the breakup hurt her. The memory has never truly left her: “You move on and live your life, but it was definitely a fantastic time, and I’ve probably been searching for something like that ever since – and haven’t found it.” His tragic death in 1997 was a devastating blow for Kylie Minogue and still pains her today, as she reveals in a very emotional interview for her documentary.
Fighting cancer
She’s also brutally honest when it comes to her breast cancer diagnosis. At 36, she received the devastating diagnosis and had to cancel her performance at the Glastonbury Festival. This forced Kylie to go public with her diagnosis – and she was hounded by paparazzi during her grueling treatment. Every step she took was followed.
In the series, Kylie Minogue reveals a major secret: in 2021, the cancer returned, and she had to fight the disease a second time. She wanted to do it privately and therefore kept the terrible diagnosis to herself. “I was looking for the right time to say it. I don’t feel obligated to tell the world, and in fact, I couldn’t at the time because I was just a shadow of my former self,” Kylie explains. She processed it in her own way: in the song “Story.”
