The global hit Emily in Paris is back after a year and a half of waiting, and viewers can finally see if it lives up to the hype. Contrary to its name, the plot of this new season unfolds in Rome. It begins when the protagonist, Emily Cooper, is sent to manage a new branch of the communications agency in Italy. The trailer also revealed a new romance with an Italian, Marcello. The series explores various romantic and professional challenges, but this new season offers much more than its predecessors, focusing on art, fashion, and Italian life, and also featuring some time spent in Paris.
The protagonist is Emily Cooper, a young marketing executive from Chicago who moves to Paris to work for a prestigious French luxury communications firm. Upon arrival, she has to deal with a major culture shock and face various professional challenges and romantic adventures. But ironically, most of the time she tries to balance her personal and professional life. Cultural clashes, differences, and the idealized Parisian lifestyle are central to the story, so a dramatic shift is expected in the new season. We’ll see how the Italians are portrayed.
The success of the series continues to surprise, especially given its reception by the French public. From the outset, the number of views, comments, and reviews was very high, but the French had complaints about how they were portrayed. They argued that the image presented was inaccurate, that it relied too heavily on French stereotypes, and they also questioned how the actors agreed to participate in the series given its implications.
Furthermore, from the outset, fashion enthusiasts eagerly anticipated the series due to the involvement of Patricia Field, the costume designer for Sex and the City and Gossip Girl. However, the outfits in the latter series did not achieve the same level of iconic recognition as those in the previous two shows that propelled her to stylistic stardom.
A year full of successes for the protagonist, Lily Collins
But who is the star of the show? Lilly Collins (Guildford, UK, 36 years old), the actress who rose to even greater stardom with the first season of the series in 2020, if that were even possible. Collins is an actress, model, and singer, the daughter of renowned singer Phil Collins, who has won several Grammys with iconic hits like “In the Air Tonight” and “Another Day in Paradise.” As an actress, she already had a solid career before appearing in Emily in Paris. In 2016, she became known for the romantic drama Rules Don’t Apply , a film for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress.
In Emily in Paris, she plays an American living in France, but nothing could be further from the truth. She was born in a British town in southeast England, but at the age of seven, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother after her parents’ separation. There, she studied journalism at the University of Southern California. This led her to publish a book titled “No Filter. No Shame. No Regret. Just Me,” a collection of personal essays by the actress aimed at a young audience. In it, she opens up about her relationship with her body image, relationships, and family.
Her work as an actress and journalist is not her only noteworthy achievements; she has been a role model in many fields since her youth. Back in 2007, when she was just 18, Chanel selected her to wear one of their haute couture designs to the Bal des Débutantes in Paris for an episode of the series The Hills (2006).
Her husband is Charlie McDowell, a film director and screenwriter known for Perfect Love Doesn’t Exist in 2014, The Discovery in 2017, and Fruits of the Wind in 2022.
Throughout the year, Lily Collins has been surrounded by success. She had her first child, Tove Jane McDowell, in February, which caused a stir because she had never been pregnant and had the baby via surrogacy. This is the highlight of her year: “There are no words to describe this new journey, this new life. I love you with all my heart, Tove, with all the parts of it that have grown deeper since the day you were born and all those parts I didn’t even know existed,” Collins expressed.
The actress has been in the spotlight for several years now, having gone from being “so-and-so’s daughter ” to having a name of her own. But her life hasn’t been easy; she’s faced many challenges. In the past, she opened up about her eating disorder as a teenager after playing a difficult role as an anorexic, for which she had to lose a significant amount of weight, to the point of raising concerns about her health, in the 2017 film “To the Bone.” These concerns were echoed by her fans this year after her appearance at New York Fashion Week.
