After quitting Jon Snow spin-off, HBO is reportedly considering new direction for franchise
This information comes after the long-announced Jon Snow spin-off was cancelled, which is said to have failed to find a suitable creative direction. According to available data, one of the main challenges was the dark tone of the story, aimed at the state of the character after the end of the original series. Even though George R.R. Martin has previously expressed certain reservations according to the recording of direct extensions, HBO confirmed in 2022 that the project related to Jon Snow was in development, which now further fuels speculation about the focus change.
The potential series about Arya Stark would be set after the events of the Game of Thrones final and would follow her journeys after sailing in order to discover “what is located west of Westeros.” Such an approach would represent a significant change in tone and environment over the previously considered ideas. Unlike the introspective and gloomy narrative planned for Jon Snow, this project is described as an adventurous, with the ability to expand the action to the Essos or even completely new continents. One of the key creative collaborators is the Quac Dang Tran, author of the Drops of God series, although the official confirmation does not yet exist.
It is important to emphasize that the project does not currently have official approval and is at a very early stage of development. However, the very possibility of Maisie Williams’ return has generated significant interest among the audience. At the moment when HBO is already expanding the universe through the series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon Season 3, the open question remains whether Arya Stark will really lead the first real chronological continuation of the story—or this project will remain just one more idea in the consideration phase.
