New Yorkers Fête in George Condo and Mickalene Thomas at the New Museum’s Spring Gala

Giant larkspurs and lush artemisias weaved their way across the Art Deco stairway as guests ascended the reception hall. Dressed to the nines with the evening’s ‘festive attire’ dress code, attendees showcased their sartorial prowess in full force. The room was a sea of bright ensembles with mesmerizing colors and textures. Guests shimmered in blinding sequins, swathed in floor-sweeping florals, and sported bold animal prints. Some wore works of art—such as Tracee Ellis Ross, the host of the evening, who was dressed in an azure-blue handpainted Marni frock.

After an hour of cocktails and conversations with music by DJ April Hunt echoing through the hall, dinner service began. All fifty tables were adorned with a luscious arrangement of ranunculi in orange, pink, and yellow, contrasted with violet tablecloths and neon green name cards.

“I never really expected all this to be front and center, and I really just appreciate being behind the scenes, although I do love being fashionable which is a contradiction,” Thomas teased as she received her award. “I’ve always been unapologetically, authentically me, and I will continue to be a model for people to be their best selves.”

Condo, who isn’t a fan of large events, also came out to receive his honorary award. “I love the New Museum, and I love Lisa Phillips,” he quipped “She’s been around with me—and behind me—since 1987.”

A live auction took place as courses were served. Generous patrons of the New Museum were spoiled with rare artworks and one-in-a-lifetime experiences. And what are these luxe offerings, you might be wondering? One bidder secured a Dior Lady Art 8 x Mickalene Thomas Sofa Bag for $35,000, while two others walked away with Marilyn Minter paintings for $105,000 each. Another patron claimed Nari Ward’s “Restin’ Whirl Lit Prayer” painting for $180,000, and, for the grand finale, a very lucky individual will enjoy a week-long voyage set to sail from Corfu, Greece on Dakis Jannous’ private yacht, the ‘Guilty,’ along the Ionian Sea for $115,000—raising a total of $2.1 million for the New Museum’s diverse initiatives.

Deon Jones sang a soulful performance of his songs “Revival” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday” after the auction before endless amounts of the iconic Cipriani vanilla meringue cake gave guests a sugar high that rushed them to the dancefloor. And even with the inclement weather, the festivities showed no signs of stopping.
