During a nationwide police operation, officers conducted 5,000 breathalyzer tests. Sixty charges were filed for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The 21-hour operation, which lasted until the morning of February 14th, was specifically designed to improve road safety throughout the state.
Thousands of inspections uncover numerous violations
In addition to the 5,050 breathalyzer tests conducted, 1,263 on-the-spot fines were issued and a total of 1,087 charges were filed. Particularly alarming are the 60 charges for impairment due to alcohol or drugs.
Brigadier Darius Konrad, head of the Lower Belgium State Traffic Department, emphasizes in a police press release: “Although the vast majority of drivers act in accordance with regulations and responsibly, the 42 driving licence confiscations and a total of 60 charges for impairment by alcohol or drugs clearly demonstrate one thing: These targeted enforcement operations are an indispensable measure to consistently guarantee safety on Lower Austria’s roads.”
As part of the operation, the state police directorate also published recommendations for road users: Anyone who consumes alcohol should generally not drive, as even small amounts can impair reaction time.
Arrange a taxi for the return journey in advance.
It is also advisable to arrange a safe journey home before consuming alcohol – whether by taxi, public transport, or with a fit driver accompanying you. Attention should also be paid to interactions between medications and alcohol and their effects on driving ability.
