I enjoy using my Apple Watch, iPad, Apple TV and HomePod speakers as much as I do the iPhone. I also use a Mac as my main computer, both at home and in the company that I work for. Everything just works and works well and that seamless integration and the ease of use it delivers is what has made the firm so successful.
The firm generally only releases four phones a year, two Pro models and two non-Pro models. In 2024, there were quite a number of differences between the Pro and the non-Pro, including for the first time the sizes.
The largest model was the 6.9in iPhone 16 Pro Max which featured the largest display on any mainstream non-folding phone. The other Pro model was the 6.3in iPhone 16 Pro. The only hardware differences between these two units were the screen size and the battery life.
Similarly, the only distinction between the 6.1in iPhone 16 and the 6.7in iPhone 16 Plus models were the size of the screens and batteries. All the other specs and features were identical. I tested the gorgeous teal coloured iPhone 16 Plus extensively.
Apple iPhone 16 Plus key features

Apple iPhone 16 Plus compared favourably to many of the flagship non-folding Android phones released in 2024 that I tested, apart from Honor’s Magic 6 Pro, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra and Google’s Pixel 9 Pro XL. In short, it was one of the best handsets of the year.
It had the longest battery life of any smartphone I’ve ever tested. On many days I had more than 50 percent juice in the tank at midnight from a 100 percent start at 8am. A more casual user than me might get up to three days’ endurance from this battery.
Apple iPhone 16 Plus sports a bright and sharp 6.7in screen with an old-fashioned 60Hz refresh rate. You get a redesigned camera module that seems to have divided opinion as it is quite dated looking but it does enable Spatial Video recording that will be useful for anyone who owns a Vision Pro headset. Sadly that means nobody in Ireland will see any benefit as the Vision Pro has yet to be released here and it’s unlikely now that it ever will be.
The 16 Plus is powered by the blazing fast A18 processor which, as is always the case with Apple mobile devices, has plenty of performance headroom to ensure this phone will be just as capable and zippy a few years from now. However, six months on it has become clear that due to the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, all the 2025 Android flagship phones have even more performance headroom than iPhone 16 but this is unlikely to be an issue with anyone considering buying an iPhone.
Apple Intelligence key features

Apple iPhone 16 Plus runs iOS 18 out of the box but Irish consumers did not get immediate access to any of the much hyped Apple Intelligence features which is the same for all EU users. However, all of that changes in April with the release of the iOS 18.4 software upgrade.
I’ve been testing that on Beta in recent weeks and have found Apple Intelligence fun and enjoyable even if it’s not quite as slick and polished as the AI features on Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra or Google’s Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Many new features will be added to Apple Intelligence in the months and years ahead but here’s what I have tested and enjoyed so far.
Summaries to correspondence
Apple Intelligence can summarise notifications, Mail messages and web pages so that when a notification arrives, such as a text from a friend or group chat in Messages, the iPhone creates a brief summary in one sentence. They can occasionally be unintentionally funny but I find them useful more often than not.
If you use the native Mail app, you can also generate a longer summary of emails. Tap the Summarise button at the top of an email to view a succinct rundown of its contents.
In Safari, when viewing a page on which the Reader feature is available, tap Show Reader and then tap the Summarise button at the top of the page.
Glowing Siri and Siri improvements

The first time Apple Intelligence was enabled on my iPhone was back in January during a trip to the UK (to Apple HQ in Battersea, coincidentally) when my device detected I was no longer in the EU.
The glowing colours around the edges of the full-screen was what alerted me to my new tricks and tools. But when I landed back in Dublin a couple of days later the AI and Siri’s animation glow was disabled again automatically.
It may be a small thing, but the multi-colour Siri animation has been one of the most pleasing aspects when testing iOS 18.4 in recent weeks. (See video at the top of post.)
Interactions with Siri are greatly improved and the third party AI service ChatGPT is integrated so if Siri doesn’t immediately know the answer you will be asked if you’d like to use ChatGPT instead. You don’t need a ChatGPT account to take advantage of this but if you do have one, you can sign in.
You can also now summon Siri’s help silently, which I love. Just double-tap the bar at the bottom of your screen to bring up a glowing search bar and on-screen keyboard for a voice-free search. Or if you want to perform a voice search but don’t want to say ‘Hey Siri’, just long press the power button to awaken the multi-colour halo and Siri’s ears.
Reduce Interruptions Focus mode
Focus modes on the iPhone can be enormously helpful, such as turning on Do Not Disturb or creating personalised Focus modes to shield yourself from only the most important distractions.
The new Reduce Interruptions Focus mode is a clever filter for what gets past your block on notifications. Even items not specified in your criteria for allowed notifications (such as from certain family members) might pop up. These can include weather alerts or texts from your bank when a large withdrawal has occurred.
Prioritise Notifications
This is a really useful Apple Intelligence feature. When a notification arrives that looks like it could be more important than others, Prioritise Notifications pops it to the top of the notification list on the lock screen (with a colourful Apple Intelligence glow too).
Playground

This clever image generation app is superior to any other I have tested previously and creates images based on text prompts. You can start with a source image such as a photo or write what you want to create, and then refine your results by adding more descriptions.
Clean Up
Apple iPhone 16 Plus with iOS 18.4 includes Clean Up, an AI-enhanced removal tool similar to Google’s Magic Eraser. It’s far from perfect in this first iteration but it can be effective.
When you are editing an image and you tap the Clean Up button, the AI analyses the shot and suggests potential items to remove by highlighting them. Tap one or draw a circle around an area and the Photos app will then erase those areas and use generative AI to fill in plausible pixels.
Other Apple Intelligence features I tried were Genmoji (AI-generated emoji) and Image Wand (transform a doodle or sketch into an image).
iPhone 16 Plus cameras

The iPhone 16 Plus features a fantastic point and shoot camera system that produces consistently pleasing images and video on its 48MP wide, 12MP ultrawide and 12MP selfie cameras. There is no dedicated telephoto lens which seems poor value given the price of the phone. But you can snap a 2x optical zoom crop shot from the main Fusion camera. And the software onboard includes the excellent revamped Photographic Styles feature.
The 16 Plus handset includes both the Action Button (that I find most useful) and the much-hyped Camera Control button that I rarely employ as it’s too finicky and doesn’t comply with that Apple modus operandi of something that just works and works well.
iPhone 16 Plus verdict
Going back to my earlier point on this device’s status among its competitors, if you are an Apple lover, then chances are it does not matter to you how any iPhone compares to Android flagships. All you care about is how the iPhone 16 Plus compares to other iPhones. And it’s here that in my opinion iPhone 16 Plus falls short.
When it comes to storage, I’d advise you to ignore the128GB model and choose at least 256GB. My review unit of iPhone 16 Plus had 200GB of storage taken up already after only a few weeks of use.
And while I accept not everyone will need as much storage as me, 128GB storage is just not good enough value on any phone costing more than €1,000, especially when phones that cost half the price such as Honor 200 come with 512GB of storage as standard.

The 256GB iPhone 16 Plus costs €1259 which is €230 less than the €1489 iPhone 16 Pro Max. That extra €230 looks well worth it on paper.
On the iPhone 16 Pro Max, you get a larger, faster screen; Always On Display; slightly superior A18 Pro chip; superior ultrawide camera with 48MP macro photography; an extra telephoto lens with one of the best 5x optical zooms on any phone; Dolby Vision 4K video recording at up to 120fps. You also get ProRes video capture; Night mode portraits; studio-quality microphones; LiDAR scanner; an even longer lasting battery; faster data transfers and you can save your images both in Apple PRORAW and in the new JPEG XL format.
That’s a lot of extra features for just €230. And while €230 is not exactly small change, I would guess that if you are willing to spend nearly €1300 on a new phone then you would be willing to pay nearly €1,500 too.
Pricing and availability
Apple iPhone 16 Plus (recommended 256GB model) costs €1,259 on the Apple website. The reviewed model with 512GB storage costs €1,509. At the time of publication, there is 10 percent off both models on Amazon.
