Many professions in Germany face a shortage of skilled workers. Meanwhile, foreigners often only take years to fully utilize their skills. Many of them work in elementary jobs, reports Deutsche Welle.

Unexpectedly, the National Health Fund “makes money” on them.

Nearly 36% of foreigners perform basic work, while among German workers the figure is just over 12%. One in eight foreigners with a university degree (12.5%) is employed only as a support worker.

The main reason is the lengthy and bureaucratic procedures for recognizing qualifications , says Sultan Waraich, director of the Duesseldorf-based recruitment agency Curato.

Untapped potential

In regulated professions, such as nursing, the procedure for recognition of qualifications and supplementary courses can take up to 15 months.

The Institute of the German Economy (IW) estimates that unused production potential resulting from a shortage of skilled workers cost approximately €49 billion in 2024. According to forecasts, this amount could rise to €74 billion by 2027.
