Facts

Greenland, a Danish territory denied Trump’s claims. The deputy mining minister Jørgen Hammeken-Holm told CNN, “there are activities by U.S. companies,” but “they are only for defense in the area.”

The smaller explorations underway, he said, “could take years to become operational, but they are Danish companies” citing difficulties associated with Greenland’s Arctic terrain.

Trump on Wednesday declared on Truth Social that “massive oil, gas, and mineral exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!”

He claimed “there are experts that are saying that the amount of easily available Oil is far greater than that of almost any land, anywhere in the World and, even more importantly, from a Security Purpose in the Defense and Offense of both the United States of America, and Europe, is second to none.”

Tangent

An agreement Trump signed with Greenland last month—designed to ease tensions between the two countries and focused primarily on military activities—acknowledges “minerals cooperation,” but the Danish government denies.

Key Background

The agreement Trump signed with Greenland is designed to ease tensions between the two countries after Trump has repeatedly said the Danish territory should become part of the U.S. Trump said during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly shortly before the agreement was signed that it facilitates “the process of developing a large military presence in the appropriate locations” in Greenland, including “building two very major military bases.” The accord, which will remain in effect if Greenland becomes independent, allows the U.S. to “modernize and expand” operations at Pituffik Space Base and set up “additional defense areas in Greenland and strengthen its military operations or facilities.” It also says the U.S. can establish a so-called “Golden Dome” defense system Trump has touted to deter incoming missiles from striking U.S. territory.
