Maïmouna Doucouré directs FKA twigs in this feature film produced by StudioCanal.
After Charles Aznavour, Édith Piaf and Dalida, another French icon will have her own biopic.
FKA twigs will portray Josephine Baker in a film written and directed by the multi-award-winning Maïmouna Doucouré (Cuties , Hawa), with Olivier Lorelle as co-writer.
StudioCanal has just announced the start of filming and details in the synopsis that this film will tell “the incredible story of the incomparable Josephine Baker. It will explore her rise to international fame in 1920s Paris, her involvement in the French Resistance and her participation in the American Civil Rights Movement, revealing the courageous, complex and extraordinary woman behind the legend.”
The studio also details Josephine Baker ‘s extraordinary life : “Born from a childhood marked by racial segregation and hardship, the young Josephine Baker left 1920s America to find her artistic freedom in the Paris of the Roaring Twenties, where she became one of the biggest stars of the stage and screen of her time. In 1951, when she returned to perform in the United States as a celebrity and World War II heroine, Josephine had to confront the contradictions of her fame and the injustice she had once fled.“
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Giuseppe Maggio, Gregory Montel, Benjamin Millepied, Feodor Atkine, Alex Lutz and Harmony Riley complete the cast.
The Josephine Baker film is produced by StudioCanal and Bien ou Bien Productions, with CPB and Leyland Films as associate producers, and with the support of Josephine Baker ‘s sons (Jean-Claude Bouillon Baker and Brian Bouillon Baker) as well as her rainbow tribe.
