Santos was elected to Congress in 2022 and was charged with several charges of fraud, money laundering and making deliberately false statements to the House just months later, following allegations of fabricating numerous claims about his life, including his education, previous employment and his financial statements. He was expelled from the House in December 2023 and eventually pleaded guilty to a single charge of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in August 2024.
